Aspects of anthropological methods covered are: The module examines the relationship between theory and method within anthropology. We are concerned with the specific techniques that are used by anthropologists as they conduct their fieldwork. This module also draws attention to how ethnographic knowledge produced during fieldwork is both relational and contextual.
We consider certain historical conjectures and power dynamics that have contributed to the way ethnography is perhaps at times rather paradoxically at once defined as a product and perceived as a process. To this end, the module explores the epistemological and ethical foundations of anthropological methods in order to encourage you to think about fieldwork as an encounter and ethnography as the relation between anthropological practice and theory.
You should expect to learn about the history of anthropology methods. In doing so, you will be able to raise critical questions concerning the ways in which ethnographic knowledge is produced. What constitutes as ethnographic evidence? What are the aims of anthropological research? What does participant-observation mean to anthropologists? Why might ethics matter in anthropology?
The lecture each week explores some aspects of these questions, while more detailed and interactive discussions will follow in the seminars.

Black Nightclubs in London 4 Apr , We’re only going to be in London for 4 days before sliding down to Paris so were just trying to maximize our time. For at least for one night though, we want to be around a predominately black crowd since we know that theoretically, we won’t be exposed to that kind of atmosphere since everything we hear about the city’s nightlife hinges on its “diversity”.
Mid-town Manhattan has a ton of clubs that have a mostly black crowd so I just assumed London wouldn’t really be that much different Maybe it’s not and I’ve been mis-informed. Anyway, what could be poppin’ today could be dead weight bout time we get out there in September, so I guess I’ll repost the question again around Mid-August when I’ll be two weeks out from my trip.
Still, all input and ideas are appreciated. LondonFlare, I read a couple reviews about that place Notting Hill Arts Club and it seems to be something we’ll be interested in doing. With nowhere in the area that catered for Afro hair, I dreaded a trip to the hairdressers, where I found myself apologising to stylists for my difficult hair and shelling out hundreds of pounds on lotions and potions that failed to deliver.

After starting out at the age of 22 — working as a beautician in the Ivory Coast — Fatuma opened her own salon in Paris, where she met her English husband-to-be. After they were married, the couple returned to England and Fatuma decided to take her hairdressing skills to Walton High Street. What I find is that because, before I arrived there was nowhere to go, a lot of people did things on their own hair at home.

Why are British Africans better in school than Caribbeans? Exam results are showing an increasing disparity between the two groups Written by Jermaine Haughton Image Text: It placed the group among the lowest achievers at secondary school when compared with pupils of other ethnic minority communities. By looking a little deeper, the statistics suggest pupils from a black Caribbean background are dragging down the average.
And that pattern goes back to the year However, while the trend revealed by the data is cause for concern, raw information, of course, must be viewed with some degree of caution as there is not much context provided such as social class, quality of local schools and parental occupations. But the unavoidable question remains – why are African children performing substantially better than their Caribbean counterparts? Heidi Mirza, professor of race, faith and culture at Goldsmiths College, University of London, states that the different migration patterns of African and Caribbean people may be a factor.
Mirza, who was born in Trinidad, added that Caribbean parents have become too reliant on the education system and needed to play a more active role. But Caribbean parents need to be more involved. Experts also say that poverty rates among the black community are among the reasons for poorer-than-average school performances. However, when comparing African and Caribbean groups, the results are surprising.
Feyisa Demie, head of research at Lambeth Council, discovered in a study that the high educational aspirations of African parents, inspirational leadership and strong links with their African communities are among the main factors why African pupils tend to outperform their peers.
