The eddy current loss is a complex function of the square of supply frequency and inverse square of the material thickness. Magnetostriction related transformer hum Magnetic flux in a ferromagnetic material, such as the core, causes it to physically expand and contract slightly with each cycle of the magnetic field, an effect known as magnetostriction , the frictional energy of which produces an audible noise known as mains hum or transformer hum. Stray losses Leakage inductance is by itself largely lossless, since energy supplied to its magnetic fields is returned to the supply with the next half-cycle. At higher voltage and power ratings, shell form transformers tend to be more prevalent. Each lamination is insulated from its neighbors by a thin non-conducting layer of insulation.
Most alternating-current AC generation and transmission, and a good part of use, take place through three-phase circuits. If you want to understand electric power, you must know something about three-phase. It is rather simple if you go at it the right way, though it has a reputation for difficulty.

I have a new water heater, and the hook up terminals are labled are they hooked the same as in the panel ? You have to find out if you have 3 phase or single phase power. If this is a new unit you will find a wiring diagram inside the front cover. Single phase has 2 “hot” wires. There is a big difference when you hook it up wrong.
I don’t know if this is a new installation or if you are replacing an old one. The terminals are numbered for 3 phase. If you look in your breaker box, 3 phase will haven a breaker with 3 spaces hooked together by one bar. Single phase will have two spaces hooked together by a bar. So if the breaker kicks out it will flip all 3 space on 3 phase or 2 spaces on single phase. If you already have wires to the location of the booster heater, you may have to use single phase if that is all that is at that location.
If you have single phase power you will have to look at the wiring diagram and you will see the terminal block represented for both single and 3 phase. Normally running from the terminal block will be six wires marked 1 through 6.
How to connect 3 phase power
Graphing the data isn’t necessary, nor did I use this, but it may help you see how different configurations effect the outcome. From the data table and chart, there are a couple of configurations which work fairly well. Notice that at no time do all three phases reach volts. This would be a perfect conversion. While I could get more power out of my motor when the voltage from B to C was closer to volts, this would make the voltage from A to C much higher than volts, which results in too much current flowing through that set of windings.

To my horror I found the neutral wire was taped onto the steel conduit feeding the switch it had not been run all the way back to the main breaker panel. And the high leg conductors are usually identified with a orange paint or tape. A well trained Electrician can spot the type of 3 phase service coming into a building by how the transformers are wired but many can not and in the case of the wild or high leg services an Electrician may never encounter one of these services in his entire life.

Thread starter 2 The way I designed this type of system Miller System is rather strait forward and that allows for it to have some basic rule of thumb numbers that will get you close enough to be able get your setup working and will allow you to fine tune your system with very favorable results after that. For a typical 1 horsepower volt three phase motor to work well on single phase you will need two AC motor run capacitors C1 and C2 of around 10 micro farads each and preferably with at least a VAC rating however a higher voltage capacitor works the same.
The motor start capacitor C3 is a uf VAC type. These values are proportional to any size of motor within reason. For example a 25 HP motor would need two uf motor run capacitors and uf of motor start capacitors. Obviously if other voltages, frequencies, and power rating systems are used the numbers will change as well.

Nov 15 Posts: Sorry about having the huge pictures! I typed my question earlier, but it seems it disappeared when I attached my first picture. The first picture shows an area where something should be attached, but I did not get anything from the owner to put there. It is labeled “Multicolor”. I don’t know if I am missing a part, or if this is something that I don’t need to worry about.
Do you think I am missing something, or can I leave that area labeled Multicolor like it is? I hope I got the rest of it hooked up right. I have the owners manuel with tons of wiring diagrams, but I have no clue how to read it. I hear these diagrams are hard to come by, so if anyone needs a copy, let me know and I’ll mail you one. Could the missing plug be for a timer or something? They were using a T-Max timer system in the salon.

Trouble is, with three-phase -unlike Alice’s Restaurant- you can’t always get anything you want. If it’s tapped delta, giving L to L for the single-phase load, then the three-phase loads are connected at , not – no way around it.
