Electric Hook Up
Volkswagen Autosleeper Clubman GL, a typical European campervan The term motorhome is sometimes used interchangeably with campervan, but the former can also be a larger vehicle than a campervan and intended to be more comfortable, whilst the latter is more concerned with ease of movement and lower cost. Campervans usually have a small kitchen with a refrigerator which is often powerable by a choice of gas, battery, or mains electricity and a two-burner gas hob and grill. They generally have dual-voltage lighting which can work from either a dedicated battery other than the van battery known as a deep-cycle or leisure battery, or from AC power , supplied at a campsite via a hook-up cable. Larger models may include a water heater, space heating and air conditioning, a portable toilet and even an internal shower. Smaller models often carry a “porta-potty” portable toilet, and sometimes an external shower which operates within the privacy of an awning. The term ” Dormobile ” is sometimes used generically in the United Kingdom thanks to a once highly popular conversion brand, and “Kombi” is used in Australia and other countries. The popularity of this type expanded in the s after Volkswagen commissioned the Westfalia company to use the Kombi version of their Type 2 transporter as the basis for a campervan. Off-road variations[ edit ] Often called a 4WD camper or 4×4 camper, these vehicles are perfect for going off the beaten track and exploring unsealed roads. Some models include expandable tents mounted on the roof while others have pop-up roofs for additional sleeping space and storage.

Links Accessories So now for the exciting bit, the chance to personalise your camper van. Firstly you will need some essentials for your first camping trip i. A driveaway awning is for most people an essential piece of kit, giving extra space and some shelter from our English weather. How about a Thule back box to carry some extra equipment or possibly a solar panel so that you can spend more time in remote parts of the country and then perhaps cruise control to make those long European motorway journeys less tedious.

Hooking Up Your Toad To Your Motorhome Once you have obtained the proper pieces to safely tow your vehicle behind your motorhome, the next step is to know the right way to hook up and attach all the pieces. First, you need to attach the tow bar pieces to the baseplate of your vehicle. They are held in place with pins and clasps, but I also add padlocks on each adapter. That way, I have better peace of mind that they will stay in place even if one of the pins should happen to come loose. Next, the tow bar itself is positioned over the adapters and then attached to the adapters using padlocks or pins.
Obviously, you need enough room to get the toad behind the motorhome and relatively straight. The V-bar style tow bar requires that you and your partner get the toad exactly lined up so that the cup on the front of the tow bar is aligned with the ball on the motorhome.

My one is more square than this one. But thanks any way. Cannock Staffordshire Took until now for our flap to break off on our way down to Spain in December, nearly 12 months. Have just today ordered a new one via ebay. Will post how the refitting goes. You cannot replace just the flap on the square ones. Know this is old but problems still happen to all owners well I think they do.
Cannock Staffordshire Have now replaced the whole electric hook up box as I was right you cannot just get a new flap for the type on our van. Worth it as now looks neat and tidy again no tape or missing cover. A half fingernail blob of blue tack in both lower corners of the lid will put off disturbing the wallet moths. Cannock Staffordshire George that’s what happened with ours, the catches cracked and the end result was the flap flying away LOL.
Probably try a hair dryer to soften it when the weather gets better.

Modern motorhomes have quite sophisticated electrical systems. Often these will be both 12 volt battery and volt mains and may include the means to convert from one to the other. The first thing to understand is the entirely different scale of household and portable electricity. Household electricity consumption is measured in Kilowatt-hours and we use about 50 of them per day in our home.
Household electricity is limitless – the electricity company delivers however much I want. In complete contrast my motorcaravan battery holds a finite amount of energy — a bit less than just one kilowatt-hour in fact! In fact batteries of all kinds are the big modern disappointment, they’re always too big in size or weight but too small in capacity. I read a ‘QI fact’ the other day that said all the batteries in the world would power us all for only about ten minutes!!
Recognise the limitations and life will be easier. The technology is very similar to that in a motorcar but with one very important lifestyle difference. When you are in a car the engine is running almost constantly and generating electricity to power everything you need. In a motorhome your greatest electrical needs are when you are stationary and the engine is not contributing at all.
This is potentially a real problem if you intend to stay in one place for a long time.
Touring away from hook-up
Whether you have a Volkswagen T1, a Citroen H van or a Sprinter, wiring your van will be more cost effective if you plan it well. This is not sales based, we don’t do this type of work, it is aimed to advise only. Many people plan their Campervan Wiring piecemeal, they start with a Habitation area battery then add a split charge relay.
Then a mains charger, then Lights, Gas heater blower controller, water pump, power monitoring, Solar charging of the Habitation battery, etc. One thing often not built in is the ability for a ‘one touch’ isolation of every device from draining power when the van isn’t being used. You don’t need to go around turning everything off when you put the van away, just one touch shuts down all 12v.
